Who We Are

Prevent Blindness Texas was established as a non-profit, voluntary health agency in 1956 and incorporated in 1965. For fifty years, Prevent Blindness Texas has been directly responsible for saving the sight and enhancing the visual quality of life for thousands of men, women and children in the State of Texas. Prevent Blindness Texas brings increased awareness to the public of the warning signs of eye problems and the importance of early detection and treatment to prevent unnecessary vision loss. In its sight-saving efforts, Prevent Blindness Texas constantly forms new alliances with various groups in the local area where efforts and programs affect its mission.

What We Do

The mission of the organization is to prevent blindness, preserve sight and enhance and extend the quality of vision life for all Texans through free programs such as eye safety educational programs for home, industry and sports, glaucoma screening and preschool and adult vision screenings. Prevent Blindness Texas provides these sight-saving services through its eleven branch offices located in Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Galveston, Houston, Lubbock, Midland, San Antonio, Rio Grande Valley and Lufkin.

Our Organization

The branch offices are staffed by an Executive Director and a Program Director. The State Office of Prevent Blindness Texas, located in Houston, has a five-person staff. The state office and branch staff are qualified to conduct Prevent Blindness Texas educational programs. In addition, all Executive Directors and Program Directors have at least two years of experience conducting various community eye health and safety programs. The majority of the Directors have been actively involved in developing support groups for eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. Prevent Blindness Texas is also supported by hundreds of volunteers who conduct vision screening services, present educational programs and assist in the daily operation of the state and branch offices.
