Although it has adapted with the times, the mission of Prevent Blindness America has been consistent for 100 years: to prevent blindness and preserve sight.
Formed in 1908 as the "Committee on Prevention of Blindness" under the previously-established New York Association for the Blind, it adopted a more national scope as the "National Committee for the Prevention of Blindness" seven years later. In 1928, it was renamed the "National Society for the Prevention of Blindness"
and shortened to "National Society to Prevent Blindness" in 1978. "Prevent Blindness America" became the official name in 1993 at the 85th Anniversary.
