makyaarjun, If you use your glasses or other lenses -1.00, you should be able to see well to do your studies. If you have glaucoma with abnormally high pressure, you should be able to keep your vision for all your life with Travatan or other methods to lower the pressure. Probably the most important thing is that you have your doctor check your eyes regularly for your whole life, so that if the glaucoma is getting worse, he can change the treatment. If the glaucoma gets worse and you don't know about it, it can make you go blind and you won't be able to get your vision back. You may have to use different kinds of eye drops, have laser treatment, or maybe even have surgery some time through the years, but if you take care of your glaucoma, you should do well. It is probably best to have one really good doctor rather than see many different doctors, because a new doctor may see glaucoma, but can't tell if it is worse or better than before. Late night use of computer or watching TV will not harm your eyes. Neither will masturbation. |

Hang in there. I had just turned 17 when I was diagnosed with glaucoma. I am 43 now. While it has not been easy, I still have excellent vision, and am very likely to have it for life. You are fortunate to have been born during a time where there are many treatment options to control your glaucoma. There are drops, laser surgery, and coventional surgery. As a matter of fact, I had cutting surgery on my left eye about 5 weeks ago(trabeculectomy). So far, everything is well. As far as I know, computer use does not harm eyes, but it can make them tired. Eyes are for seeing! The other activities you mention should not bother your glaucoma. What is important is that you do EXACTLY what your doctor tell you to do. Do NOT skip drops and use them as directed. What has saved my vision is my faithful use of the drops. MAKE SURE YOU KEEP YOUR DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS!! This is crucial because if the pressure starts going up, he can change your drops or do something else. We both have what is considerd Juvenile Glaucoma, the the prognosis is excellent with proper treatment. God Bless! |

Howdy. I would start a new thread instead of jumping into this one, but I don't know how. Sorry. I was just diagnosed last week. I was told that I might lose vision in my left eye. Apparently my optic nerve is shot. I have educated myself about glaucoma, but I find nothing on how to cope with this whole thing.I don't know anyone who has glaucoma and I feel very much alone. Hi, my name is Melody and I have glaucoma. |

Hello, Melody! I was born with glaucoma as a congenital condition, and I've had next to no eyesight in my right eye since birth. I also have it in my left eye, though to a much lesser degree. As difficult as it has sometimes been, I have been as dilligent with my medication as possible and have maintained as much of the sight in my left eye as I can. I'm now in my mid-thirties and still doing just fine. I get checkups every four months or so to make sure the pressure is where it should be, and while I can't really drive a car I funnction well enough in just about every other situation. It's good that you've caught this now and have the opportunity to take steps to deal with it. Listen to what your doctor says, talk to people in the forum, and stay positive! There is a lot of help out there for you... |

Makyaarjun, Sorry I don't have an email account. I am 46 and I have no family history of glaucoma. I am feeling less alone these days, thanks to this forum. I have done a ton of research on the web, gotten books from the library and have received booklets from the Glaucoma Foundation. The MRIs of my brain and orbits came back negative, so now I don't have to worry about a cancer recurrance. I see a glaucoma specialist this coming week, so hopefully I will be told what kind of glaucoma I have. Thank you for your kind offer to email with me. |

Hello Mrclriggs! I can see that there is alot of help out there for me, which is good because my family hasn't been the most supportive. My sister yelled at me for only calling when I have bad news, and my dad yelled at me for "feeling sorry for myself" when I only wanted to process and talk one day after I found out I lost 25% vision in one eye. *sigh* However, my husband and kids have been fantastic. Its good to know how independent and sucessful someone can be with low vision. Thanks for responding to my message. |
