Acanthamoeba Keratitis and Contact Lenses

Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is a serious eye infection that affects the cornea, the clear outer layer of the eye. AK is caused by exposure of the eye to water (pools, lakes, ponds, oceans, and tap water) that has tiny organisms living in it called Acanthamoeba. AK most commonly affects people who wear contact lenses.
