Best Eyes for Life Vision Survey

A recent 2026 survey by Prevent Blindness found that nearly 75% of Americans mistakenly believe they would notice symptoms if something was wrong with their vision or eye health. In reality, serious conditions like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy often progress silently in early stages.

This national survey of over 1,000 U.S. adults aged 18+ highlights widespread misconceptions about eye health.

Key Survey Findings

  • Nearly 75% of respondents think vision or eye health issues would cause noticeable symptoms, despite many diseases being asymptomatic early on.
  • 24% get eye health information from the internet or social media.
  • 72% know dilated eye exams detect eye diseases, but far fewer recognize they also spot diabetes (27%), high cholesterol (15%), brain tumors (11%), or heart disease (10%); only 2% knew they detect all five.
  • 47% unaware that swimming in contact lenses can damage eyes.
  • 25% had not had an eye exam in 3-5 years or longer.
