Prevent Blindness Announces Call for Applications for the 2017 Joanne Angle Investigator Award

14th Annual Grant Provides Funding for Sight-Saving Research

CHICAGO (Jan. 4, 2017)Prevent Blindness, the nation’s oldest volunteer eye health and safety organization, is announcing the call for applications for its 2017 Joanne Angle Investigator Award.  The Award is a grant provided annually to a public health research project that seeks to put an end to unnecessary vision loss.

Since its inception in 2003, more than $1 million has been awarded to eye and vision research projects.  The award was named for Ms. Joanne Angle who served on the National Board of Directors for Prevent Blindness, and both its Government Affairs and Audit committees, in addition to her work with the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).

The deadline for the fourteenth annual Joanne Angle Investigator Award is Monday, March 6, 2017, at 12 p.m. (ET). Grants are for a one-year period, up to $25,000, reviewed by a panel of experts, and commence on July 1, 2017.

The Joanne Angle Investigator Award provides funding for research investigating public health related to eye health and safety. Applications will be accepted in the following priority areas in adult vision, children’s vision, or eye injury:

    • Burden/economic aspects of eye disease/vision loss on society

    • Best practices to integrate vision screening/follow up care to system care access

    • Vision program effectiveness/evaluation

This year, preference will be given to public health research that relates to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and/or glaucoma. All research grants need to promote the core mission of Prevent Blindness – preventing blindness and preserving sight. Basic laboratory science research will not be supported under this program.

“Providing much-needed funds for sight-saving research has been part of our mission to prevent vision loss since our founding in 1908,” said Hugh R. Parry, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness. “Today, through the Joanne Angle Investigator Award, we continue to support individuals and institutions that are working towards that same goal.”

The recipient of the 2016 Joanne Angle Investigator Award from Prevent Blindness was Rajeev S. Ramchandran, MD, MBA, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.  The study was entitled, “Implementation Science Based Study of Teleophthalmology for Diabetic Retinopathy Surveillance.”
